What is cellulite?
Cellulite is a condition of the skin that is most commonly seen on the thighs, buttocks, and the hips. It appears as a section of lumpy skin that is often described as resembling the dimples similar to that in the peel of an orange.
Cellulite is not a medical issue; it is purely cosmetic and affects 80-90% of women. Having cellulite is the norm for just about every woman.
Cellulite is often thought to be caused by being overweight, but this is a bit of a myth. Underneath our skin we have some tough connective tissue that holds are skin and muscle together and underneath this we have our normal fat stores. As we age this connective tissue losses its elasticity and retracts and often there is a degeneration of the fat cells caused by stagnation of normal circulation. Due to this reduced circulation, the fat cells underneath break down. Added to this, the weak connective tissue allows fat to push through, causing the puckered appearance of skin.
